The Nittardi Estate, on the boundary between the provinces of Siena and Florence, was originally a defensive tower known as early as 1183 by the name of “Nectar Dei” (The Nectar of the God). In the 16th century, the vast property belonged to the Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti who, in 1549, while painting the Sistine Chapel, wrote to his nephew Lionardo: “I’d prefer two casks of wine rather than eight shirts.” On that same occasion, Michelangelo also sent Nittardi wine to Rome as a “genuine gift to the Pope Julius II”. Today, in honor of that tradition, every year the first bottles of Nectar Dei, the top wine from the Maremma vineyards, are presented to the Pope. Over the centuries the property changed hands often until, in 1982, it was taken over by the Frankfurt publisher and art gallerist Peter Femfert and his wife Stefania Canali, a historian from Venice. Stefania and Peter restored Nittardi step-by-step and with love and care. , Casanuova di Nittardi Chianti Classico is a pure Sangiovese from the single vineyard “Vigna Doghessa” in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti. The vineyard lies on a south-facing hill at 450 meters above sea level and has a soil full of schist stones, which engenders the wine with a fine minerality and pleasant freshness. Since 1981, Nittardi has paid annual homage to Michelangelo by having an internationally recognized artists. This year’s label of the Chianti Classico was designed by the famous artist Fabrzio Plessi. He was born in 1940. He is an Italian installation, media and video artist., The aromas of the wine are intense and remind you of violets and cherries, followed by elegant hints of aromatic herbs and spices. On the palate red fruit, vanilla, with crisp tannins and a long-lasting round finish. |
